The Smart Money is Still on Solar
Experts agree households can still enjoy great returns on solar power
Many homeowners are aware that the Government has slashed solar subsidies. However, many householders are not aware that the solar industry has slashed costs, so solar still remains a great prospect for UK homeowners. As the Prime Minister David Cameron acknowledged at a recent international energy conference in London; “Already, solar costs have halved in two years.”
The Solar Trade Association calculates that solar power still produces sound returns on investment of up to 10%, as good as when the Feed-In Tariff scheme began. YouGen, the independent consumer-led advice website says that “at 21p the generation tariff for installations up to and including 4kWp solar PV [household size] is still a really attractive proposition.”
Terry Skee, Commercial Director of Cleaner Air Solutions UK Ltd, “There have been a lot of gloomy headlines about solar power but the fact is the returns on offer are far better than anything you can get in the bank. The smart money is on solar. And by investing in solar power not only do householders protect themselves from rocketing electricity bills, they help local businesses and employment. In the last year we have expanded and built new offices and warehousing facilities in Meadowfield, County Durham".
C&C Group wins contract to build Green Deal database
IT firm C&C Group has won a major contract to provide the "nuts and bolts" of the government's flagship Green Deal energy efficiency scheme, which will include building a database to hold up to six million property retrofitting plans.
The Master Registration Agreement Service Company (MRASCo) – a joint venture consisting of nearly 90 energy supply and distribution firms – yesterday signed a contract with C&C to design, develop, implement, and maintain the Green Deal Central Charge database.
Gemserv, which will assume responsibility for the deal on behalf of MRASCo, refused to reveal the value of the contract, maintaining it was commercially sensitive.

Prime Minister heralds rapid progress of the UK's green economy and outlines his vision for the future
The Prime Minister David Cameron made the case for clean energy in the UK and globally today as he addressed delegates at the Clean Energy Ministerial being held in Central London.
Speaking to energy ministers from 23 leading economies, and alongside a series of government and commercial announcements, the Prime Minister said:
"There are huge challenges facing governments across the world today, and one of the most important of all is how we meet our growing energy demands in a way that protects our planet for our children and grandchildren.
"With global demand forecast to increase by more than 40 per cent in the next two decades, we urgently need a more diverse, cleaner mix of energy sources that will give us energy security without causing irreparable damage to the planet.
"Renewables are now the fastest growing energy source on the planet. And I am proud that Britain has played a leading role at the forefront of this green energy revolution.
Skills "time bomb" threatens renewables growth
Renewable Energy Association wants national strategy to ensure sector's expansion stays on track
The renewables sector is facing a skills "time bomb" that could derail the UK's green energy ambitions unless concerted action is taken.
That is the stark warning contained in a report by trade body the Renewable Energy Association (REA), published yesterday, which predicts meeting the target of producing 30 per cent of the UK's electricity and 15 per cent of overall energy from renewable sources will require a renewables workforce of around 400,000 by 2020 – a four-fold increase in just eight years.
DECC urged to delay subsidy cuts after solar market crash
New figures show 2MW of solar installed last week, less than half that recorded this time last year
The government has been urged to delay another round of deep cuts to the feed-in tariff for solar electricity, after new figures revealed the number of businesses and homes installing photovoltaic has panels crashed following the latest cuts to incentives on April 1.
Weekly government figures revealed that solar firms installed an average of 2MW each week since the start of April, marking a sharp decline from the 4.8MW average capacity installed in the same weeks last year.
This month's figures are the lowest since January 2011, aside from the week leading up to 1 January 2012, when just 0.4MW of capacity installed.
Government and energy suppliers reach agreement to help consumers get best deal
"We need to get bills as low as possible. I know that many families are struggling with rising energy bills. We can't control volatile world energy prices. But we can still help people get their bills down.” (Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg)
The Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, has announced how the Government and energy suppliers will put people in control of their energy bills by making sure that they can easily find and get the best deal for them.
The initiative will complement other proposals that Ofgem is progressing to protect consumers - and help build consumer trust in energy markets.
Fuel panic buying: Are electric car owners feeling smug?
As talks aimed at averting a strike by fuel tanker drivers resume this week, electric car owners talk about whether the grass really is greener on their side. . . . .
Renewable energy company Cleaner Air Solutions Ltd was also of the same opinion and Terry Skee, the company's commercial director, was one of those behind the decision to buy a fleet of five Nissan Leaf company cars.
Terry Skee's company owns a fleet of five Nissan Leaf cars"We make significant savings on fuel, it gives us flexibility as we can charge them on site and they're fun and funky to drive," said the 53-year-old from County Durham.
One of the issues often raised with owning an electric car is the difficulty in recharging them but with about 2,500 recharging points across the UK, according to the Department for Transport, this is becoming less of a deterrent.
"It's a great benefit to be able to charge the car at work and far better than waiting in a queue for petrol," said Mr Skee.
"If the strike goes ahead, I would offer my friends a lift. I wasn't going to sit and pour more fuel on the fire the way the government did."
